Ferry Market, San Francisco

This market was the best of all markets that I've ever been to. The recently and shortly revived New Amsterdam market comes close, but this one sang to me with its myriad heirloom varietals of tomatoes, its ripe and juicy stone fruit all for sampling, the wild looking and affordable floral bouquets, the bushels of lavender that somehow everyone flocked to, and the crabcake and oyster booths dotted among the produce. Yes I got a crabcake. I overheard while on this trip more than a handful of conversations about home gardening and backyard farming. I marveled at the compost bins and looked forward to the day they will be in New York City too.

I didn't think I did but now I realize I do love San Fran just a little bit.
